192 Bagel Shop - West Melbourne - 4 Stars
"Without an unfettered press, without liberty of speech, all the outward forms and structures of free institutions are a sham, a pretense--the sheerest mockery." -- Borah
For several weeks, I toyed with the idea of scratching bagel shops off the list of reviewable restaurants. First of all, it would be hard to top Corey's Bagels as the premiere bagel place in Brevard County. Additionally, all of the shops get virtually all of their bagels from the same purveyor. However, I stumbled upon - well, intentionally came to - 192 Bagel Shop in the Publix Plaza in West Melbourne. As I entered, I was greeted by a happy, bubbly young lady named Mikayla, which was a very good way to start things off. I perused the case and noticed it was all of the exact same bagels you find at all the other bagel shops. So, I knew immediately where the rubber meets the road must happen after you order.
I requested a nova lox bagel and an egg salad on a Kaiser roll. I stepped down to the pickup area and watched magic happen. The nova bagel was covered in delicious smoked salmon with the appropriate amount of cream cheese delicately applied. This is an important point: Many bagel slingers either get stingy with the cream cheese or they slather the bread excessively. This was not to little or too much - it was just right. The onions are cut to order and the capers are fresh.
What happened next stunned me. Chris, the owner, starts making the egg salad. I asked him, "do you make every batch to order?" He affirmed my question and said that freshness was why he felt his place was better than the other bagel shops around here. I have to admit I was impressed.
If you're looking for a great place for your morning fare, this place is worth a try. Not your typical run-of-the-mill bagel place, the Big Boy highly suggests you stop in 192 Bagel Shop!
