"Well, you can rock it you can roll it/You can slop and you can stroll it at the hop..." -- Danny & The Juniors
A stone's throw down from the Melbourne Civic Center and across New Haven is where you will find The Burger Place. With ample outdoor seating, a counter seating area, and chairs and tables right out of June Cleaver's kitchen, one is reminded of the car hop burger joints of years gone by. While waiting to be shown a table I also noticed that the kid's meal comes in a '57 T-Bird box. Very cool. Just as I was beginning to regret not wearing my black leather jacket or rolling up my pants a bit, I was shown to my table and handed a menu. The menu is also displayed on the wall for take-out orders.
A pleasant young person named Hannah soon approached and asked me if I was ready to order. As my cardiologists youngest child was to enter college soon, I had to go with the 16 oz. Maxi Cheeseburger with Cheddar, bacon, mustard and onion along with fries and my ever loving iced tea. Hannah was on her toes throughout the meal and didn't miss a beat. It wasn't all that long before Hannah was seen returning joyfully with my meal.
As one can see by the pictures it truly was a sight to behold. As each burger is made to order in an open kitchen, it was exceedingly fresh. Everyone knows that the key to a good sandwich (yes, a burger is technically a sandwich) is the base; be it bread, bun or roll. The Burger Place places their burgers on freshly toasted sesame buns. The bun tasted like it was baked fresh that morning, was toasted to a perfect golden brown and had just the right amount of chewiness to make it a pure delight. Not to be outdone, the piéce de résistance of the meal, 16 oz of freshly formed ground beef lay snuggled inside smothered in a delicious gooey blanket of melted cheddar cheese, onions and bacon. Cooked to order it was the perfect medium and oozed flavor with every bite. As good as all this was, it was the fries that really got my attention. Hand cut and deep fried to order with the skin on, these had to be some of the best french fried potatoes I have yet to chow on. Washing this all down with a freshly brewed ice tea brought to mind a favorite commercial of mine from the 70s and all I could think was, "It doesn't get any better than this."
The Big Boy says, "For fresh burgers, fresh tea, handmade shakes and a taste of nostalgia The Burger Place has you covered." Next time, I'm coming with a duck-tail! #iamthebigboy #bigboydiningout
